Glial cells are merely passive glue and support for the neurons that perform all meaningful nervous-system processing.

What we know now

Glial cells do much more than hold neurons in place. Different kinds of glia insulate nerve fibers, control the chemical environment around neurons, supply metabolic support, help shape synapses, regulate local blood flow, guide development, and perform immune functions in the nervous system.

Why it changed

Neurons produced obvious electrical signals, while the surrounding glial cells looked mainly structural, which made the old 'neural glue' idea plausible. Better recordings, microscopy, molecular methods, and genetic experiments later showed glia responding to neural activity and performing essential jobs throughout nervous tissue.

The name glia comes from the Greek word for glue. It reflects an old division of labor: neurons were the cells that carried meaningful electrical signals, while glial cells were thought mainly to fill space, support tissue, and insulate the nervous system.

Better tools revealed that “support” covered a much wider set of active jobs.

Different glial cells do different things. Oligodendrocytes in the brain and spinal cord, and Schwann cells in peripheral nerves, wrap nerve fibers in myelin. This insulation helps electrical signals travel quickly and reliably.

Astrocytes help control the concentrations of ions and neurotransmitters around neurons, supply metabolic support, influence local blood flow, and help maintain the environment around synapses.

Microglia are immune cells of the central nervous system. They survey tissue, respond to injury and infection, clear debris, and help reshape connections during development.

These roles do not mean that neurons have stopped being central to rapid information transmission, and some proposed forms of glial signaling remain debated. The established correction is simpler: glia are not passive filler. They are essential working cells with many specialized functions.
