Birds have little or no sense of smell and rely almost entirely on sight and hearing.

What we know now

Birds vary widely in olfactory ability. Many use smell to navigate, find food, recognize individuals and nests, detect predators, and choose mates.

Why it changed

Bird behavior is visually and acoustically conspicuous, and many species do not visibly sniff. Textbooks therefore treated birds as nearly anosmic. Anatomical, behavioral, genetic, and field studies revealed functional and sometimes highly developed olfactory systems.

Birds advertise vision and hearing spectacularly: bright plumage, precise flight, elaborate calls, and obvious responses to visual landmarks. They generally do not sniff in a mammal-like way, so classical zoology often treated smell as a weak or nearly absent avian sense. That generalization survived even though species such as kiwis, petrels, and vultures offered hints that some birds were doing much more with odor.

Experiments and field observations eventually made the case harder to dismiss. Birds have functional olfactory bulbs and receptor genes, and different species use odor to locate food, navigate over long distances, recognize nests and individuals, detect predators, and influence mate choice. The size and importance of the olfactory system vary enormously across the class.

The correction is therefore not that every bird has a bloodhound’s nose. It is that “birds barely smell” was a poor class-wide rule built partly from how humans happened to observe them.
