Giant pandas are closer to raccoons than to bears.

Giant pandas belong to the bear family, Ursidae. Red pandas belong to their own family, Ailuridae, and are more closely related to musteloids such as raccoons, weasels, and skunks.

Why it changed

The giant panda combines bear-like anatomy with a raccoon-like face, specialized bamboo feeding, and a shared name with the red panda. Molecular and genetic studies resolved the giant panda as a true bear.

The giant panda was a classification headache almost from the moment it entered Western zoology. Its body and skull had bear-like features, but its masked face, specialized bamboo diet and resemblance in some traits to the much smaller red panda encouraged proposals that the two “pandas” belonged near raccoons.

Anatomy produced competing signals, and classifications shifted for decades. The difficulty illustrated a general problem in taxonomy: animals can independently evolve similar features because they occupy similar ecological niches, while highly specialized diets can obscure deeper ancestry.

Molecular evidence eventually broke the tie. Protein comparisons and later DNA studies placed the giant panda firmly within Ursidae, the bear family. The red panda followed a different history and is now placed in its own family, Ailuridae, within the broader musteloid group that includes raccoons, weasels and skunks.

The shared word “panda” therefore hides two distant relationships. Giant pandas are unusual bears; red pandas are not bears at all.

The older raccoon placement was not foolish—it reflected genuine morphological ambiguity before genetic tools could directly test evolutionary relationships.
