Predators merely reduce prey populations and therefore have no positive role in maintaining ecological communities.

What we know now

Predators can regulate dominant competitors, alter prey behavior, sustain species diversity, and trigger effects across food webs. Removing a key predator can simplify or reorganize an ecosystem rather than merely increasing prey abundance.

Why it changed

Management and early ecological reasoning often treated predators mainly as competitors, pests, or sources of prey mortality. Removal experiments, especially Robert Paine's intertidal work, showed that predators can prevent one prey species from monopolizing resources and thereby maintain community diversity.

Predation is lethal to individual prey, so the simplest population-level interpretation is subtraction: fewer predators should mean more prey and therefore a healthier prey community.

That reasoning also shaped wildlife management, where predators were often treated primarily as competitors for game or livestock.

Community ecology showed that removing a predator can have less intuitive effects. In Robert Paine’s famous intertidal experiments, removing the predatory sea star Pisaster allowed mussels to dominate space and exclude other species. Diversity fell even though one prey population prospered.

The result helped establish the idea of a keystone predator: a species whose ecological effect is disproportionately large because it prevents dominant competitors from monopolizing resources.

Later work documented trophic cascades in many systems, where predator loss or recovery alters prey behavior, vegetation, smaller consumers, and food-web structure.

Predators do not always increase diversity, and introduced predators can be devastating. Their effects depend on the structure of the particular ecosystem.

The correction is that predator impact cannot be reduced to “they kill prey.” In some communities, predation is part of what maintains ecological diversity and stability.
