Noble gases are completely inert and cannot form stable chemical compounds.
What we know now
Noble gases are usually very unreactive, but some can form stable compounds. Xenon has the richest chemistry, and compounds involving krypton, radon, and argon are also known under suitable conditions.
Why it changed
In 1962, Neil Bartlett produced the first recognized noble-gas compound. The result showed that a filled outer electron shell makes reactions difficult, not impossible.
