Saturn is the only planet with rings.

What we know now

All four giant planets in our solar system have rings. Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune have much fainter systems than Saturn.

Why it changed

Saturn's rings were the only known planetary ring system for about three centuries. Uranus's rings were discovered in 1977, Jupiter's in 1979, and Neptune's ring system was confirmed later.

For centuries, Saturn’s rings looked unique. They were bright enough to see through modest telescopes, while no comparable structures were visible around the other planets.

That changed in 1977, when astronomers watching Uranus pass in front of a star saw the starlight blink several times before and after the planet itself crossed the star. The pattern revealed a set of narrow rings.

Voyager 1 then discovered a faint ring around Jupiter in 1979, and later observations and Voyager 2 established Neptune’s ring system.

The apparent uniqueness of Saturn was therefore partly an observational selection effect. Its rings are unusually broad, bright, and rich in reflective water ice, while the other giant planets have darker, thinner, and much fainter systems.

Saturn remains exceptional in appearance; it simply is not unique in possessing rings.

The category has broadened even further since then, because rings have also been found around some much smaller Solar System bodies. This card concerns the original planetary claim.
