Reported rogue waves are physically impossible exaggerations by sailors.

What we know now

Rogue waves are real, rare ocean waves that are much larger than the surrounding sea state. They can arise through nonlinear interactions, current focusing, directional effects, and ordinary statistical extremes.

Why it changed

Reports of isolated walls of water often exceeded expectations from standard linear wave models and were dismissed as unreliable. Instrumental measurements, most famously the Draupner wave recorded in the North Sea in 1995, confirmed that extreme waves can occur.

Sailors had long reported isolated walls of water far larger than the surrounding waves. The stories were difficult to verify and often exceeded what standard linear wave statistics seemed likely to produce, so extreme accounts could be dismissed as exaggeration or measurement error.

On 1 January 1995, instruments on the Draupner oil platform in the North Sea recorded an exceptional wave directly. The Draupner wave rose dramatically above the surrounding sea state and supplied the kind of objective measurement the debate had lacked.

Rogue-wave research expanded rapidly afterward. Extreme waves can arise through several mechanisms, including ordinary statistical chance, interaction between wave groups, focusing by currents, directional effects, and nonlinear dynamics.

There is no single mechanism behind every event. A common statistical reference is the significant wave height, a measure of the surrounding sea state; rogue-wave definitions compare an extreme wave with that baseline.

The revised science does not validate every dramatic maritime story. It establishes the narrower point that isolated waves far larger than their surroundings are physically real and measurable.
