What we know now
Most nutritional rickets results from inadequate vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate. These shortages impair bone mineralization—the hardening of growing bone with calcium- and phosphate-rich mineral. Limited sunlight, diet, malabsorption, and some inherited disorders can all contribute.
Why it changed
Rickets was common in crowded industrial cities and often accompanied respiratory illness, making infection and hygiene plausible causes. Animal experiments, sunlight treatment, cod-liver oil, and vitamin D isolation established a nutritional and metabolic explanation.
