Ecological succession naturally ends in one permanent and stable climax community.

What we know now

Succession can follow multiple pathways and may produce different long-lasting states. Disturbance, climate, species arrival, historical contingency, feedbacks, and human activity can prevent or redirect any single endpoint.

Why it changed

Frederic Clements's influential succession theory treated vegetation development as an orderly process culminating in a climate-determined climax. Field studies and later ecological theory demonstrated persistent disturbance, individualistic species responses, alternative stable states, and multiple possible trajectories.

Frederic Clements gave early twentieth-century ecology one of its most influential organizing ideas. After disturbance, vegetation was expected to pass through an orderly sequence of communities—a process called ecological succession—until it reached a mature climax community determined chiefly by regional climate. Clements compared the process to the development of an organism toward an adult form.

That model made succession intelligible, but field ecology increasingly resisted its determinism. Species often responded individually rather than as a tightly integrated community. Fires, storms, grazing and other disturbances could recur before any permanent endpoint formed, while differences in colonization history could send superficially similar sites along different trajectories.

Later work added stronger challenges. Feedbacks can maintain more than one long-lasting ecosystem state under similar external conditions, and systems can sometimes shift abruptly between them. Climate change and human land use further undermine the idea of a universal final community waiting at the end of succession.

Ecologists still use “climax” in some descriptive settings, and succession can certainly produce relatively persistent communities. What was superseded was the expectation of one inevitable, permanent endpoint for every ecosystem.
