Atoms are the smallest possible pieces of matter and have no internal structure.

What we know now

Atoms contain electrons and a nucleus made of protons and usually neutrons. Protons and neutrons are themselves made of quarks, while electrons are currently treated as elementary particles.

Why it changed

Experiments with cathode rays, radioactivity, particle scattering, and nuclear reactions revealed smaller particles and internal structure within atoms.

The name atom comes from an ancient idea of something that cannot be cut further, but ancient atomism was philosophical rather than an experimentally established model of matter.

By the nineteenth century, atoms had become powerful scientific entities. Dalton’s chemistry explained fixed combining ratios by treating each element as built from characteristic indivisible atoms. For chemical reactions, that model worked remarkably well.

Late-century experiments began opening the atom.

J. J. Thomson’s cathode-ray work identified the electron, a negatively charged constituent far smaller than an atom. Rutherford’s scattering experiments then showed that most atomic mass and positive charge are concentrated in a tiny nucleus rather than spread throughout the atom.

The nucleus itself acquired structure with the proton and Chadwick’s 1932 neutron. Later particle physics showed that protons and neutrons are composite particles made from quarks and gluons.

Atoms remain fundamental to chemistry because they are the smallest ordinary units that preserve an element’s chemical identity. Breaking or changing the nucleus moves into nuclear physics and can turn one element into another.

The correction is therefore physical, not chemical: atoms are extraordinarily useful units of matter, but they are not indivisible.
