Radioactivity is a chemical or molecular property that should change when a substance is heated, cooled, dissolved, or combined.

What we know now

Radioactivity originates in unstable atomic nuclei. Ordinary changes in temperature, pressure, or chemical bonding generally have little or no effect on nuclear decay rates.

Why it changed

Researchers found that radioactive emissions and decay rates persisted through chemical separation and physical changes. Rutherford and Soddy concluded that the transformations occurred within atoms rather than molecules.

Radioactivity was discovered before the atomic nucleus was known. It was therefore reasonable to ask whether the strange emissions behaved like an unusual chemical property—something that might depend on molecular combination, temperature, dissolution, or physical state.

Experiments showed remarkable stubbornness. Radioactive material could be chemically separated, heated, cooled, dissolved, or incorporated into compounds while its characteristic activity persisted.

Rutherford and Soddy concluded that the process belonged to the atom itself, not to ordinary molecular chemistry. Radioactive decay represented spontaneous atomic transformation.

Later nuclear physics localized the phenomenon more precisely in unstable nuclei. Ordinary chemical bonding rearranges electrons but leaves the nucleus largely untouched, which is why chemistry generally does not switch radioactivity on or off.

There are specialized exceptions in which electronic environment can slightly influence particular decay modes, but these effects are tiny compared with ordinary chemical changes.

The historical shift matters because radioactivity helped reveal that atoms were not chemically indivisible eternal units. They contained deeper structure capable of transformation.
