An earthquake's source cannot be located unless observers are near the place where it occurs.
What we know now
Seismic stations can locate earthquakes from far away by comparing the arrival times and directions of different wave types across a network.
Why it changed
Before sensitive seismographs and global timekeeping, reports depended largely on felt shaking and visible damage. Instrument networks revealed P waves, S waves, and travel-time differences that could be used to triangulate an epicenter and estimate depth.
