Not a fact anymore
Beriberi is caused by an infectious agent or toxin associated with rice.
What we know now
Beriberi is caused by thiamine deficiency. It can damage the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, or both.
Why it changed
Animals fed polished rice developed neurological illness but recovered when rice bran was restored. Later researchers isolated the protective nutrient now known as vitamin B1, or thiamine.
