Luxuriant tropical rainforest was widely taken as evidence that the underlying soil was exceptionally fertile and could remain highly productive after clearing.

What we know now

Tropical soils vary enormously. Many rainforests grow on old, deeply weathered soils that are poor in readily available nutrients, with productivity sustained by rapid recycling through biomass, litter, roots, fungi, and microbes. Volcanic, alluvial, and younger tropical soils can be naturally fertile.

Why it changed

Nineteenth- and early-20th-century observers often inferred fertile ground from luxuriant tropical vegetation. By the 1930s, tropical soil surveys were showing that forest cover was an unreliable guide to agricultural fertility: highly weathered and leached soils could support dense forest through tight nutrient cycling yet lose productivity rapidly after clearing. Later soil science also showed that the reverse stereotype—that all tropical soils are infertile—is equally wrong.

Dense tropical forest once invited a simple inference: vegetation this luxuriant must be growing on extraordinarily fertile ground. That assumption also encouraged the idea that cleared rainforest should remain highly productive for agriculture. Tropical soil surveys increasingly showed otherwise. By the 1930s, soil scientists were explicitly warning that forest luxuriance was not a reliable measure of agricultural fertility.

In many wet, old tropical landscapes, intense weathering and leaching leave relatively few readily available nutrients in the mineral soil. Forests can remain extremely productive because nutrients are captured and recycled rapidly through living biomass, litter, roots, fungi, and microbes. Clearing can disrupt that cycle and expose soil to erosion and nutrient loss.

The reverse generalization is also wrong. Tropical soils are diverse: young volcanic soils, alluvial soils, and other local settings can be highly fertile.
