A sea sponge barely resembles a familiar animal. It is fixed to the substrate, has no muscles or nervous system, and often grows in branching or encrusting forms that look more botanical than zoological.

That appearance made sponges difficult to place in early classification systems. Some naturalists treated them as plants or as intermediate organisms somewhere between conventional kingdoms.

Microscopy exposed distinctly animal biology. Sponges pump water through internal canals using specialized flagellated cells, capture food particles, digest nutrients, reproduce sexually, and often produce free-swimming larvae.

They are now placed firmly within the animal kingdom and are crucial to research on the early evolution of multicellular animals.

Sponges remain unusual animals. They lack true organs, nerves, muscles, and a conventional digestive cavity, but those features are not prerequisites for animal ancestry.

The reclassification illustrates a recurring problem in early taxonomy: an organism’s adult outward appearance can hide a life cycle and cellular organization that tell a very different evolutionary story.
