Not a fact anymore
Schizophrenia is caused by dysfunctional parenting and contradictory family communication.
What we know now
Schizophrenia is a complex disorder involving genetic vulnerability, brain development, biology, and environmental risk factors. Family relationships do not create the disorder.
Why it changed
Mid-20th-century psychiatry promoted ideas such as the 'schizophrenogenic mother' and the family 'double bind.' Genetic, epidemiological, developmental, and neuroscience research failed to support those theories.
