Schizophrenia is caused by dysfunctional parenting and contradictory family communication.

Mid-twentieth-century psychiatry often searched for the origins of schizophrenia inside the family. Theories of the “schizophrenogenic mother” blamed cold, controlling, or contradictory parenting, while the “double bind” hypothesis proposed that repeated incompatible messages trapped a child in pathological communication.

These ideas were influential partly because schizophrenia’s biology was poorly understood and psychoanalytic explanations dominated large parts of psychiatry.

They also imposed a heavy burden on families, especially mothers, by treating ordinary or stressed relationships as the cause of a severe psychiatric disorder.

Genetic studies, adoption and twin research, developmental evidence, epidemiology, and neuroscience increasingly pointed elsewhere. Schizophrenia is now understood as a complex disorder involving inherited vulnerability, brain development, and multiple environmental risk factors rather than one pathogenic family pattern.

Family environment can still matter greatly after illness develops. High conflict or stress can affect relapse risk, and supportive family interventions can improve outcomes.

That therapeutic relevance is not evidence that families created the disorder. The causal family-blaming theories themselves did not survive.
