What we know now
Respiratory particles form a continuous range of sizes rather than two clean categories separated by one universal cutoff. Larger particles tend to settle faster and smaller ones tend to remain airborne longer, but their behavior also depends on evaporation, airflow, humidity, and how they are produced.
Why it changed
Infection-control guidance often divided particles into “droplets” and “aerosols” at a fixed diameter, but different fields used different cutoffs. COVID-19 exposed the mismatch, and aerosol science showed that particle behavior changes gradually rather than at one magic size. WHO-led terminology now uses a spectrum-based framework.
