A lichen is one ordinary plant-like organism with a single body and ancestry.

What we know now

A lichen is a stable symbiotic system built mainly from a fungus and one or more photosynthetic partners, often algae or cyanobacteria, along with additional microorganisms.

Why it changed

Lichens were described as individual plants because they form unified bodies. Microscopy in the 19th century revealed separate fungal and photosynthetic cells living together, and later molecular work exposed even more partners.

A lichen looks like one organism. It forms a coherent crust, leafy sheet, or branching body, grows as a unit, and can be collected and named much like a moss or small plant. Early taxonomists therefore treated lichens as ordinary individual organisms.

Microscopy revealed a stranger structure. Nineteenth-century investigators found fungal filaments wrapped around green algal or cyanobacterial cells. The lichen body was not the tissue of one plant-like species but a stable symbiosis between organisms with different ancestries and jobs.

The fungal partner builds most of the visible structure, absorbs water and minerals, and provides protection. The photosynthetic partner supplies carbohydrates; cyanobacterial partners can sometimes contribute fixed nitrogen as well.

Modern molecular studies have made the partnership even less tidy. Some lichens contain additional fungi, yeasts, bacteria, or more than one photosynthetic partner, so even the classic “one fungus plus one alga” formula can be too simple.

A lichen still functions as a recognizable biological unit and is usually named according to its main fungal partner. Calling it a symbiosis does not mean it is a loose accidental mixture. The reclassification is that this apparent individual is an organized biological partnership.
