Living organisms were generally expected to require a continuous supply of free oxygen to survive and grow.

What we know now

Many organisms live without molecular oxygen. Anaerobes use fermentation or alternative electron acceptors, and obligate anaerobes can be damaged or killed by oxygen.

Why it changed

After oxygen was identified and linked to respiration, its role in animal life encouraged a broad generalization that free oxygen was required for living beings. Pasteur's fermentation studies showed microorganisms living and multiplying without free oxygen, and later microbiology revealed extensive anaerobic metabolisms and ecosystems.

Once oxygen had been identified and animal respiration linked to its consumption, it was natural to generalize that free oxygen was a basic requirement of life. That rule began to fail in Pasteur’s fermentation experiments. In 1861 he described microorganisms associated with butyric fermentation that could live without free oxygen, and his later work distinguished organisms that require oxygen from those able to live without it.

Microbiology turned anaerobiosis from an apparent exception among ferments into a broad biological phenomenon. Many microbes use fermentation or alternative electron acceptors, facultative anaerobes can switch between metabolic modes, and some obligate anaerobes are harmed by oxygen.

The correction concerns molecular oxygen (O₂). It does not mean oxygen atoms are absent from anaerobic organisms or their environments.
