The human lineage developed a large brain before it became habitually bipedal.

What we know now

Habitual bipedalism, regular walking on two legs, appeared millions of years before the major expansion of brain size seen in the genus Homo. Early hominins retained brains broadly comparable in size to those of living apes.

Why it changed

Early theories often treated intelligence and brain enlargement as the initiating human trait. Australopithecine and earlier hominin fossils instead combined evidence of upright walking with relatively small brains.

Early theories of human origins often made intelligence the decisive first step. A larger brain seemed the obvious trait that would free the hands, enable tools and set the human lineage on a different evolutionary path, so brain expansion was frequently imagined as preceding fully upright walking.

The Taung Child complicated that sequence. Announced in 1924, the South African fossil had a small brain but anatomical features suggesting a position on the human side of the ape–human divide. Later australopithecine skeletons made the combination clearer: relatively small-brained hominins could nonetheless possess substantial adaptations for habitual bipedalism.

Older hominin discoveries pushed upright walking still farther back. Evidence from species more than four million years old shows that bipedal adaptations were developing long before the pronounced increase in brain size associated with later members of Homo.

Neither trait appeared in one instant. Bipedal anatomy evolved gradually, and brain size changed unevenly among different lineages.

At broad scale, though, the order is now clear: walking on two legs came first. Major encephalization was a later chapter in human evolution, not the initial change that created bipedality.
