The heavens above the Moon are eternal, incorruptible, and cannot undergo genuine physical change.

What we know now

Celestial objects form, evolve, erupt, collide, and die. Stars change over time, the Sun has active surface phenomena, comets move through planetary space, and transient events occur throughout the universe.

Why it changed

The 1572 nova and the great comet of 1577 placed conspicuous change in the supposedly unchanging celestial realm. Telescopic observations soon added sunspots, lunar topography, and other evidence against a sharp divide between perfect heavens and a mutable Earth.

Aristotle’s cosmos was divided into two physically different realms. Below the Moon, ordinary matter was subject to generation, corruption, and rectilinear motion. Above the Moon, the heavens were perfect, eternal, and composed of a different substance whose natural motion was uniform and circular.

That distinction became one of the organizing ideas of later Aristotelian natural philosophy. It was a theory about what kinds of change were physically possible in different regions of the universe, going far beyond the observation that stars looked stable.

Then the sky produced awkward evidence. In 1572, a brilliant “new star” appeared. Tycho Brahe’s measurements showed no detectable daily parallax large enough to place it in the atmosphere; it belonged among the stars. In 1577, a great comet likewise showed too little parallax to be an atmospheric phenomenon and had to pass through regions where nested celestial spheres were supposed to exist.

The telescopic era deepened the problem: mountains and craters marred the supposedly perfect Moon, while sunspots changed across the Sun’s surface. The heavens had become a physical place where things happen.
