The crystalline lens is the eye's primary organ of visual sensation.
What we know now
The lens refracts and focuses incoming light, but the retina is the light-sensitive neural tissue that detects photons and begins visual processing.
Why it changed
Renaissance anatomists progressively moved the receptive function away from the lens. Felix Platter placed visual sensation in the retina in 1583, and Kepler's optical model showed how the eye forms an image on the retina.
