Global sea level is essentially fixed through geological time.

What we know now

Sea level has repeatedly risen and fallen by tens to more than 100 meters as ice volume, ocean temperature, seafloor shape, and tectonics changed.

Why it changed

Modern coastlines made sea level seem permanent. Marine terraces, submerged river valleys, coral reefs, coastal sediments, isotope records, and dating revealed former shorelines far above and below today's.

A coastline looks like one of the most permanent boundaries in nature, especially on a human timescale. Early geological interpretations could therefore treat ocean level as a comparatively fixed reference while explaining raised marine deposits or submerged features through movements of the land.

As stratigraphy improved, evidence accumulated that the ocean itself had repeatedly changed volume. Ancient beaches and marine terraces occur above modern shorelines, while drowned river valleys and submerged landscapes record times when the sea stood much lower.

Ice-age geology supplied one of the clearest mechanisms. During glacial maxima, enormous amounts of water were locked in continental ice sheets, lowering global sea level by roughly 100 meters or more. Melting ice returned that water to the ocean. Thermal expansion and changes in ocean-basin geometry add other causes on different timescales.

This distinction matters because global sea level and local relative sea level are not identical. A coast can experience rising or falling water because the land itself is subsiding or uplifting even while the global mean moves differently.

The exact magnitude of very ancient changes remains uncertain, but geological sea level is not a fixed background. It has repeatedly advanced and retreated across the continents.
