What we know now

Animals and microorganisms inhabit the ocean at depths far beyond 300 fathoms (549m, 1800ft) including the deepest trenches. Deep-sea ecosystems can be supported by sinking organic matter, chemosynthesis and other energy pathways.

Why it changed

Dredging expeditions in the late 1860s recovered living organisms from depths of about 2,400 fathoms (4390m, 14400ft). The Challenger expedition then systematically documented diverse deep-sea life.

In the 1840s, naturalist Edward Forbes proposed an azoic zone: below roughly 300 fathoms, declining light, temperature and food supposedly made animal life impossible. It was a plausible extrapolation from the sparse dredging records then available, and the idea became influential even though deep sampling remained extremely limited.

The boundary began to collapse as better dredges reached farther down. Expeditions in the late 1860s recovered living animals from depths approaching 2,400 fathoms. The Challenger expedition of 1872–1876 then sampled the deep ocean systematically and found life across a huge range of depths, replacing a hypothetical biological cutoff with direct observations.

Modern exploration has extended that story to abyssal plains and the deepest trenches. Deep-sea communities can survive on organic material sinking from above and, in some places, on chemosynthesis, using energy from chemical reactions rather than sunlight to make organic matter, as well as other energy pathways.

Forbes’ hypothesis had already attracted challenges before the decisive expeditions. The correction is therefore not that everyone accepted a precise global boundary, but that an influential proposed limit proved dramatically too shallow.
