A vast southern continent must exist to balance the large landmasses of the Northern Hemisphere.

What we know now

Earth's continents are products of plate tectonics and geological history; there is no physical requirement for land area to be symmetrically balanced between hemispheres. Antarctica exists, but it is not the enormous temperate Terra Australis imagined on early maps.

Why it changed

Ocean voyages repeatedly failed to find the hypothesized continent in the expected temperate southern latitudes. James Cook's 18th-century voyages crossed and mapped large parts of the South Pacific and high southern latitudes, eliminating the giant Terra Australis shown on earlier maps.

Terra Australis Incognita was geography created partly by theory before observation.

European maps for centuries showed a huge southern landmass extending far beyond modern Antarctica. One recurring rationale was balance: the large known continents of the Northern Hemisphere seemed to require a comparable southern landmass to keep the globe geographically or physically symmetrical.

As voyages revealed Australia, New Zealand, Tierra del Fuego, and Pacific islands, mapmakers repeatedly reshaped the hypothetical continent rather than immediately abandoning it.

By the eighteenth century, Terra Australis was important enough to become an explicit target of state-sponsored exploration. After observing the 1769 transit of Venus in Tahiti, James Cook opened secret Admiralty instructions ordering him to search for a “continent, or land of great extent” to the south. His first voyage did not settle the question. On his second voyage, Cook crossed the Antarctic Circle and sailed through enormous stretches of southern ocean without finding the expected temperate continent.

Antarctica ultimately proved that a southern continent does exist. It is very different from the enormous accessible balancing landmass that earlier theory had placed across much of the Southern Hemisphere.

Because the hypothesis changed shape across many centuries, its lifespan is not treated as a single precise interval.
