What we know now

Stars form, change structure and luminosity over time, and end in mass-dependent final states. Stellar classes occupy different stages and tracks of stellar evolution rather than being permanently fixed kinds.

Why it changed

Nineteenth-century thermodynamics and spectroscopy showed that stars are physical objects with finite energy sources. The Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, stellar-structure theory, cluster observations, and nuclear physics then connected stellar properties to evolutionary sequences.

Stars appear almost perfectly permanent on a human timescale. Constellations keep their familiar patterns, and even dramatic changes in ordinary stars are usually too slow to notice directly. That made it natural to classify stars as fixed kinds rather than stages in long physical lives.

Spectroscopy and thermodynamics changed that picture. Stars could be analyzed as hot physical objects with definite temperatures, luminosities, and energy budgets rather than timeless lights.

The Hertzsprung–Russell diagram then revealed structure in the stellar population. Stars were not scattered randomly among colors and luminosities; they formed distinct sequences and groups.

Stellar-structure theory and nuclear physics supplied the mechanism. Stars form from collapsing gas, spend long periods fusing hydrogen on the main sequence, and later evolve into giants, remnants, or explosive endpoints depending strongly on mass.

Star clusters provided especially clear evidence because many stars of similar age could be compared at once.

The details are not one universal path. Low-mass stars, Sun-like stars, and massive stars follow different evolutionary tracks. What disappeared was the idea that stellar classes are permanently fixed categories.
