Slime molds are fungi.

What we know now

Slime molds are not true fungi. The name covers several groups of amoeba-like eukaryotes that crawl and feed as individual cells or moving masses before producing spore-bearing structures that happen to resemble fungal fruiting bodies.

Why it changed

Their spores and stalked fruiting structures made slime molds look fungal, so they were traditionally studied with fungi. Observations of their moving, engulfing feeding stages and later DNA-based family trees showed that the best-known groups belong with amoeba-like lineages rather than true fungi.

Slime molds earned their name and their old classification from what they look like when they reproduce.

Many produce stalks topped with spores. At that stage they can resemble tiny fungi closely enough that mycologists naturally included them in fungal classifications.

Their feeding stage tells a very different story.

True fungi typically grow as filaments and absorb nutrients from material around them. Many slime molds instead move as amoeba-like cells. They crawl across surfaces, surround food particles, and engulf them.

Some species spend much of their life as separate amoeboid cells and then gather together when conditions change. Others form large flowing masses containing many nuclei before building spore-producing structures.

Those life cycles already made slime molds unusual “fungi.” Molecular phylogeny made the separation clearer. The best-known slime-mold groups fall among amoeba-like eukaryotic lineages rather than within the true fungi.

Their fungal appearance is therefore a case of different organisms evolving similar solutions to the same problem: producing and dispersing spores.

“Slime mold” is itself a loose name covering more than one evolutionary lineage. The correction is that fungus-like appearance does not make these organisms members of the fungal kingdom.
