Not a fact anymore
Germany's Ries and Steinheim craters were formed at the same time by a binary asteroid impact.
What we know now
The Ries and Steinheim craters most likely formed in two separate impacts roughly 0.5–1 million years apart, despite being only about 40 kilometres apart.
Why it changed
Biostratigraphy and two distinct earthquake-disturbed sediment horizons separated by undisturbed deposits tied the two craters to different events rather than one simultaneous impact.
