An embryo already exists in essentially preformed miniature organization, and development mainly unfolds or enlarges structures that are already present.

What we know now

Embryonic form emerges progressively through cell division, differentiation, signaling, gene regulation, morphogenesis, and interactions among tissues. The organism is not present as a complete miniature individual inside the egg or sperm.

Why it changed

Improved microscopy and systematic embryology revealed that structures appear progressively during development rather than simply enlarging from a preformed miniature. By the early 19th century, preformationism had largely lost scientific support.

Hartsoeker's famous 1694 image became an icon of spermist preformation: the idea that a miniature organism was already present in the sperm and development mainly enlarged or unfolded it. Hartsoeker presented the figure as a speculation, not as something he claimed to have literally seen through a microscope.

Preformationism became attractive partly because the Scientific Revolution made nature seem increasingly mechanical.

If an embryo gradually acquires organized parts, where does that organization come from? To some seventeenth- and eighteenth-century naturalists, epigenesis seemed to require an obscure organizing force. Preformation offered a more mechanical answer: the organism’s parts already existed and development was essentially growth and unfolding.

The theory split into rival camps. Ovists placed the preformed organism in the egg. Spermists placed it in sperm after microscopes revealed spermatozoa in the 1670s. Nicolaas Hartsoeker’s famous 1694 drawing of a tiny curled human in a sperm became an icon of the debate, although he did not claim that he had literally observed such a miniature person.

Preformation could become spectacularly recursive. Some ovists imagined that future generations were nested inside one another like Russian dolls, all created in the ovaries of the first female.

Microscopy eventually worked against the theory that it had helped inspire. Embryologists observed structures arising progressively from initially simpler material. Caspar Friedrich Wolff’s eighteenth-century studies of chick development became particularly important for epigenesis. By the early 1800s, most scientists had abandoned preformation.

Modern developmental biology explains progressive organization through gene regulation, signaling, cell differentiation, tissue interaction, and morphogenesis.
