Mammalian spinal evolution was a simple transition from reptile-like side-to-side bending in early synapsids to mammal-like up-and-down bending.
What we know now
Fossil synapsid vertebrae do not support a simple shift from lizard-like side-to-side bending to mammal-like up-and-down bending. Early synapsids appear to have had relatively stiff spines, with later mammals evolving several kinds of regional movement and specialization.
Why it changed
The old model used living reptiles as stand-ins for early synapsids because both had sprawling limbs. Three-dimensional comparisons of fossil vertebrae showed that early synapsids occupied a different functional range from both modern reptiles and mammals.
