Around 1200, Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi examined more than two thousand human skulls and reported that the adult mandible was a single bone, directly contradicting the inherited Galenic account. European anatomical texts corrected the error more broadly during the Renaissance.

This card is important partly because it prevents the history of anatomy from becoming an exclusively European Renaissance story.

The inherited Galenic description treated the adult lower jaw as two bones joined at the chin. That is an understandable error from comparative anatomy and development: humans are born with two mandibular halves, and several animals retain a visible midline union.

Around 1200, the physician and scholar Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi encountered large collections of human skeletal remains in Egypt. He reports repeatedly examining the mandible, ultimately in more than two thousand skulls, and finding no joint at the chin. He explicitly argues that direct observation is stronger evidence than textual authority, even when the authority is Galen.

The adult human mandible is indeed a single bone. Its two embryonic halves fuse at the mandibular symphysis during infancy.

There is no single global correction date: Abd al-Latif’s observation did not instantly erase the two-bone model from other medical traditions, and Renaissance European anatomy later corrected it independently. For that reason this card is excluded from exact lifespan statistics.
