Long-lived dense planetary rings can survive only inside their parent body’s Roche limit.
What we know now
Quaoar, a small body orbiting beyond Neptune, has a dense ring far outside its classical Roche limit, the region where tidal forces can prevent loose ring material from assembling into a moon. The Roche limit is therefore not an absolute outer boundary for dense rings.
Why it changed
Repeated stellar occultations, brief dimmings when Quaoar and its ring passed in front of background stars, placed the ring at about 7.4 Quaoar radii, well beyond the classical Roche limit. Modeling showed that collisions and orbital effects can keep the particles dispersed there instead of letting them gather into a moon.
