Not a fact anymore
Asthma is primarily a psychological or psychosomatic disorder.
What we know now
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease involving variable airflow obstruction and airway hyperresponsiveness. Stress and emotion can influence symptoms, but they are not the underlying cause of asthma.
Why it changed
Psychogenic and nervous-system explanations were influential, especially for cases without obvious allergens. Airway physiology, immunology, eosinophils, inflammation, and treatment response established asthma as a biological airway disorder.
